Nestled in the serene landscape of Coleraine, Minnesota, stands the Church of the Good Shepherd, a beacon of historical and architectural significance. More than just a place of worship, this log-built church, steeped in over a century of stories, invites visitors and locals alike to step back in time and experience a piece of living history.
The Church of the Good Shepherd, fondly known as "The Log Church," was built in 1908 under the watchful eye of John C. Greenway, a parish member whose vision brought this unique structure to life. This church is not just an ordinary building; it is a work of art, a testament to the rich natural resources of Minnesota. The logs used in its construction were carefully selected from land that had remained untouched by loggers, making every beam and plank a story in itself. In a remarkable turn of events, the Christ Episcopal Church in Grand Rapids recognized the cultural and historical value of the Log Church and, in 1987, deeded it to the city of Coleraine. This act of preservation was underpinned by a mutual understanding: the church must be restored and maintained to continue gracing the National Register of Historic Places. The community responded with enthusiasm, forming the Log Church Preservation Committee, dedicated to breathing new life into this cherished landmark.
